Liberty Mutual & Safeco · Design Systems

Context - A Suite Without a Shared Foundation
The Liberty Design System was built to create consistency across the full Liberty Mutual and Safeco suite of products — giving designers and developers a shared foundation of reusable, accessible components.
Approach - Build, Document, Drive Adoption
As part of a lean team of four, I researched, designed, and documented a full component library for designers alongside code snippets and accessibility guidelines for developers. The system shipped with accompanying documentation, accessibility guidelines, and page examples.
Outcomes - Measurable Adoption Across the Organization
The system drove significant adoption across the organization — satisfaction with component design nearly doubled, code implementation adoption tripled, and guidelines usage increased by 25 points. Cross-functional partnership with marketing and content teams was key to getting designers and developers to actually use it consistently.
Reflection - What I'd Do Differently
Looking back, I would have pushed to merge the Liberty Mutual and Safeco design teams earlier in the process. Working in parallel created duplicated effort and slowed adoption — tighter cross-team alignment from the start would have let us build a more unified system faster and with stronger shared ownership from both sides.
